High Concentration Black and White Masterbatch for PE and PP Processing

BASTONE manufactures a high-concentration black and white masterbatch series at its Hangzhou production facility, supplying carbon black loadings of 30–50% and titanium dioxide loadings of 50–70% in cylindrical or spherical pellet form.
The series was formulated for PE and PP injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and blown film, with secondary use in ABS and HIPS injection coloring.
Let-down ratios run from 1:1 to 1:100 depending on target opacity, and no pre-drying is required before use.

Description

The product is a pigment concentrate built on a polyolefin carrier and produced at BASTONE's own compounding line in Hangzhou. Two variants share the same carrier platform: a white grade loaded with 50–70% titanium dioxide, and a black grade loaded with 30–50% carbon black. Both leave the pelletizer as cylindrical or spherical particles sized for standard gravimetric and volumetric dosing equipment.

Pigment loading is the specification that drives sourcing decisions, and BASTONE's formulation sits at the upper end of what the polyolefin carrier will carry without sacrificing dispersion. A white masterbatch running 70% TiO₂ lets a film processor hit target opacity at roughly half the addition rate of a 35% concentrate, which cuts both carrier resin dilution and per-kilogram coloring cost. The same logic applies on the black side: at 50% carbon black, a 1:100 let-down still delivers 0.5% carbon in the finished article — enough for standard pipe and film pigmentation without a second dosing pass.

Temperature resistance runs 220–280°C, covering the full melt window for PE and PP across injection, extrusion, blow molding, and film work, and giving headroom for the higher barrel temperatures ABS and HIPS require. Sun resistance is rated 5–8 on the blue wool scale, so the black grade holds color in outdoor applications where UV exposure would fade lower-rated pigment systems.

BASTONE's parent group operates 4 production sites and 1 R&D center, and formulation, pigment dispersion testing, and batch release for the masterbatch series all happen in-house. Carrier selection and pigment loading can be adjusted for buyers running non-standard base resins or unusual let-down ratios — a request that a pure trading house would have to pass upstream to a third-party compounder.

One trade-off deserves a direct statement: adding the masterbatch to ABS and HIPS can reduce mechanical strength depending on the proportion used. Buyers coloring engineering-grade styrenics should run trial ratios before committing to a production addition rate.

Injection molding takes the largest share of demand. Molders coloring PE and PP housings, closures, crates, and automotive interior parts benefit from the pellet geometry, which meters consistently through standard dosing units, and from the no-drying requirement, which removes a hopper-dryer step from changeovers. High pigment loading also means less masterbatch sits in the barrel, reducing the purge volume needed when switching from black to a light color.

Extrusion and pipe production rely on the black grade's carbon black content and its 5–8 sun resistance rating. Carbon black at 30–50% concentration gives extruders room to dial in the 2–2.5% finished carbon loading that outdoor pressure pipe typically requires, while the temperature resistance ceiling of 280°C tolerates the shear heat generated in high-output single-screw and twin-screw lines.

Blown film runs demand consistent dispersion at low addition rates, since undispersed pigment agglomerates show up immediately as gels and lens defects in thin gauges. Both grades pelletize on a polyolefin carrier that melts and disperses within the PE film window, and the 1:100 let-down capability lets film producers color at economical rates without overloading the extruder with carrier resin.

Granulation and fiber processing represent the more demanding end of the range. Fiber spinning tolerates almost no pigment agglomeration — a single oversized particle breaks the filament — so the dispersion quality behind the high loading matters more than the loading itself. Buyers spinning PP fiber should request a sample and run a filter pressure value test against their own spin pack before scaling up.

ABS and HIPS injection coloring is supported, with the caveat stated in the datasheet: mechanical strength can be affected depending on the proportion added. The 280°C upper temperature limit covers standard ABS and HIPS processing, but a polyolefin-carrier masterbatch in a styrenic matrix introduces carrier incompatibility that shows up as impact strength loss at higher addition rates. Keeping the let-down ratio conservative usually resolves the issue.

Why Choose BASTONE

Batch release testing and palletised masterbatch sacks staged for container loading
Batch release testing and palletised masterbatch sacks staged for container loading at the Hangzhou facility

BASTONE manufactures the masterbatch series directly rather than reselling another compounder's product. Formulation, pigment dispersion, pelletizing, and batch testing all happen under BASTONE's own quality control at the Hangzhou production facility, which means specification questions, non-standard loading requests, and batch consistency issues get answered by the people who made the material — not relayed through a supply chain.

The parent group runs 4 production sites and 1 R&D center, and the chemists behind the masterbatch formulation also support BASTONE's broader chemical portfolio. Buyers who need a carrier change for a specific base resin, a pigment loading between the standard bands, or a technical opinion on let-down ratios for an unusual application can get a formulation answer rather than a catalog answer.

Direct manufacturer supply removes the trading-house margin from the landed cost. BASTONE exports through Zhejiang Bastone Technology Co., Ltd, a platform built over 10+ years of export operations, and handles trade term flexibility, container loading planning, and export documentation in-house. Buyers sourcing masterbatch alongside polyolefin resins, additives, or other petrochemicals can consolidate multiple product categories into a single supplier relationship and a single shipment.
