CA-61S Clarifying Agent — Polypropylene Nucleating Agent for Transparent PP

CA-61S is an organic clarifying and nucleating agent for polypropylene, manufactured by Zhejiang Bastone Technology Co., Ltd at BASTONE’s Hangzhou production facility.
Added at 0.15–0.25%, the powder controls PP crystallization to shrink spherulite size, cutting haze and raising gloss while improving stiffness and heat deflection temperature.
Converters use it in food packaging containers, disposable cups, bottle closures, stationery, optical protective film, and medical syringes.

Description

CA-61S belongs to the organic nucleating agent class used to modify the crystallization behavior of polypropylene homopolymer and random copolymer. Under normal cooling conditions, PP forms large spherulites that scatter visible light and leave molded parts translucent rather than clear. CA-61S dissolves into the polymer melt and recrystallizes ahead of the PP itself, creating a dense network of nucleation sites so the polymer solidifies into crystals far smaller than the wavelength of visible light.

The optical result is measurable on a 1 mm test plaque. Neat polypropylene sits near the upper end of the haze scale, while PP nucleated with CA-61S drops to the bottom of the same range — the internal haze comparison BASTONE runs on 1 mm specimens shows the difference clearly. Gloss moves in the opposite direction, climbing from the base polymer level into the 140–150 range on the same 1 mm plaque thickness. Both effects come from the same mechanism: smaller, more uniform spherulites scatter less light at the surface and through the section.

Crystal refinement also changes mechanical behavior. Faster and more complete crystallization raises PP stiffness and heat deflection temperature, which matters for thin-wall containers that must survive microwave reheating without distortion. CA-61S carries no taste or odor transfer, so it suits food-contact converting where organoleptic performance is part of the qualification.

BASTONE produces CA-61S in-house at its Hangzhou Economic Development Zone facility rather than sourcing it from a third-party compounder. The group's R&D center develops and validates the formulation, and each production lot passes particle size, loss on drying, purity, and ash testing before release. Manufacturing control at the powder stage matters more than most buyers expect — particle fineness governs how evenly the agent disperses in the PP matrix, and dispersion quality determines whether the nucleation effect reaches the specification values above. BASTONE holds CA-61S at ≥325 mesh and purity above 97% for that reason.

Recommended Processing Conditions

Parameter Recommendation
Dosage 0.15–0.25% by weight, adjusted to the target resin and application
Pre-mixing High-speed blend CA-61S with PP powder or pellets until uniform, then extrude and pelletize
Dispersion Aid A small addition of white mineral oil during high-speed mixing promotes adhesion of the nucleating agent powder to the PP resin and prevents uneven feeding
Alternative Addition Route Prepare a high-concentration masterbatch, then let down to the target dosage
Compounding Equipment Twin-screw extruder, or single-screw extruder with high-intensity mixing capability
Process Settings Standard polypropylene processing parameters — no significant adjustment required

Applications

Technician dosing CA-61S clarifier into a twin-screw extruder feeder on a polypropylene compounding line

Food packaging containers take the largest share. Clarity sells the contents, and the heat deflection improvement from CA-61S lets thin-wall PP trays and boxes handle microwave reheating without warping — a combination that pushes PP into territory previously held by PS and PET.

Disposable water cups and jelly cups depend on the same optical gain. Injection-molded PP cups at typical wall thicknesses read cloudy without a clarifier; nucleated resin gives the glass-like appearance buyers expect while keeping PP's cost and processing advantages. The odorless, taste-neutral profile of CA-61S keeps the resin acceptable for direct beverage and dessert contact.

Stationery products and plastic bottle closures benefit more from the stiffness side of the ledger. Higher rigidity allows wall thickness reduction in closures without losing top-load strength, and faster crystallization shortens cooling time in the mold, which lifts output on high-cavitation closure tooling.

Optoelectronic protective film runs on the haze number specifically. Film applications tolerate very little light scatter, and the spherulite refinement CA-61S delivers is what makes cast or blown PP film viable where optical transmission is specified.

Medical syringes and chemical labware close out the range. Both require visual inspection of contents through the wall, dimensional stability during sterilization, and a material that contributes nothing to the fluid it holds. CA-61S supports all three without altering the standard PP processing window.

Why Choose BASTONE

Batch COA testing and palletized CA-61S sacks staged for container export at the warehouse dock

BASTONE manufactures CA-61S. Buyers deal with the production site, not a reseller holding stock bought from someone else — which means lot traceability back to the batch record, direct answers on process deviations, and the ability to discuss dosage or dispersion problems with the chemists who developed the formulation. The Hangzhou facility runs its own quality control on every lot against the particle size, loss on drying, purity, and ash specifications published above.

The parent group is R&D-oriented by structure, operating four production sites and one R&D center. In-house formulation and testing give BASTONE technical depth that trading houses cannot match on additives — when a customer's PP grade responds differently than expected, BASTONE can run the trial rather than forward the question upstream.

Manufacturer pricing follows from the same structure. No distributor margin sits between the production line and the export invoice, and export moves through Zhejiang Bastone Technology Co., Ltd, the group's trade platform with more than ten years of shipping experience. Trade terms, packaging configuration, and container loading adapt to what the destination market and receiving warehouse actually require.
