Synthetic leather and polyurethane resin production consumes the largest share. DMF dissolves PU resin at high solids loading and controls the coagulation rate in wet-process lines, where the solvent diffuses out into a water bath and leaves the microporous structure that gives synthetic leather its hand and breathability. Coagulation behavior is sensitive to water and acidity, so the ≤0.050% water and ≤0.0010% acidity limits translate directly into consistent pore structure across production runs. Acrylic and polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning uses DMF as the dope solvent in both wet and dry spinning. Fiber lines run continuously for weeks, and a solvent whose acidity drifts will degrade the polymer dope and break filaments at the spinneret. Purity ≥99.9% with methanol held to ≤0.0010% keeps dope viscosity predictable — methanol acts as a non-solvent and shifts the precipitation point.
