1-Tetradecene (CAS 1120-36-1) — Linear Alpha Olefin C14 for Surfactants, Lubricants and Polymers

1-Tetradecene is a C14 linear alpha olefin (C₁₄H₂₈, CAS 1120-36-1) supplied as a colorless liquid with a minimum 93 wt% n-alpha olefin content and C14 carbon-number purity of at least 97.5 wt%.

BASTONE Petrochem distributes the grade from major Chinese petrochemical producers, including SINOPEC, for use in surfactant synthesis, lubricant base fluids, maleic anhydride copolymers, and alkyl silicone chemistry.

Description

1-Tetradecene belongs to the linear alpha olefin family — straight-chain hydrocarbons carrying a terminal double bond at the C1 position. The terminal unsaturation is what makes the molecule commercially useful: it accepts sulfonation, hydroformylation, alkylation, and oligomerization reactions cleanly, and it does so at reaction rates internal olefins cannot match. Buyers specify C14 rather than C12 or C16 because the fourteen-carbon chain sits in the sweet spot for detergent hydrophobe length and for lubricant viscosity build.

The specification tells you how narrow the cut is. Carbon number C14 runs ≥97.5 wt% against a typical value of 99.43 wt%, with C12 held to ≤2 wt% (typical 0.474), C16 to ≤1 wt% (typical 0.028), material below C12 to ≤0.2 wt% (typical 0.066), and anything above C16 to ≤0.1 wt% (typical 0.002). A distribution that tight matters directly to formulators — carbon-number spread in a surfactant feedstock translates into inconsistent foam profiles, variable critical micelle concentration, and off-target HLB values in the finished product.

Alpha olefin content of ≥93 wt%, typically 96.11 wt%, governs conversion efficiency in sulfonation and hydroformylation. Every percent of internal or branched olefin in the feed is a percent that either fails to react or produces a byproduct requiring separation downstream. Water is held to ≤0.005 wt% (typical 0.0045), which protects moisture-sensitive catalyst systems in metal alkyl and alkyl silicone work, and platinum-cobalt chroma of ≤5 keeps the material acceptable in flavor, fragrance, and light-colored specialty applications where any yellowing carries through to the finished article.

BASTONE Petrochem does not manufacture 1-Tetradecene. We distribute it as a listed SINOPEC distributor with allocation access to China's top three petrochemical producers, which is the mechanism behind our pricing. Direct producer relationships remove the layers of intermediary margin that sit between a plant gate and a typical trading house quotation, so buyers get factory-direct pricing on drum and bulk quantities rather than reseller spot pricing. Every shipment carries a batch-traceable certificate of analysis tied back to the production lot, so the numbers on your incoming inspection sheet reconcile against the producer's own release data.

Applications

Polymer chemistry. 1-Tetradecene serves as the olefin comonomer in maleic anhydride copolymers, where the C14 chain provides the oil-soluble segment and the anhydride ring supplies the reactive, polar functionality. Copolymers of the type end up in pour point depressants, dispersants, and paper-sizing agents. Carbon-number consistency at 99.43 wt% C14 keeps the alkyl segment length uniform across batches, which is what holds copolymer solubility and wax-crystal-modification behavior stable from lot to lot.

Surfactants. The largest volume outlet covers alkylbenzene, C14 alcohol via hydroformylation, dodecyldimethylamine (ADAM), and α-olefin sulfonate. Each route depends on the terminal double bond, so the ≥93 wt% alpha olefin floor sets the ceiling on your conversion yield. AOS production is the most demanding of the group — sulfonation of an internal olefin gives a different sulfonate isomer with altered foam and detergency, so the 96.11 wt% typical alpha content translates directly into predictable surfactant performance and less unreacted oil in the finished product.

Lubricating oil. Pipeline lubricating oils and related fluids use C14 alpha olefin as an oligomerization feedstock and as a chain-length modifier in PAO-type base fluid production. Chain length drives viscosity index and volatility, so the narrow C12/C16 shoulders on the specification give formulators a base fluid with a predictable viscosity profile rather than one they must re-blend against each incoming lot.

Alkyl silicones, metal alkyls, flavors and fragrances. Hydrosilylation and organometallic routes both run on catalyst systems that moisture deactivates, which is where the ≤0.005 wt% water limit earns its place in the specification. Flavor and fragrance work adds a second constraint — color. Platinum-cobalt chroma held at 5 means the material contributes no visible tint to light-colored or transparent finished formulations.

Why Source Through BASTONE

Batch-traceable COA testing and drum export handling for every 1-tetradecene shipment
Batch-traceable COA testing and drum export handling for every 1-tetradecene shipment

Our listed SINOPEC distributor status is an allocation relationship, not a purchasing arrangement we renew order by order on the spot market. Allocation gives buyers two things a trading house cannot reliably offer: supply continuity when Chinese domestic demand tightens, and pricing built on producer contract terms. Buyers running annual volumes of C14 alpha olefin generally find our quotations land below intermediary offers on identical material, because the material moves through one commercial layer instead of three.

Documentation follows the same principle. Each lot ships with a certificate of analysis traceable to the producer's batch record, so your QC group reconciles incoming results against release data rather than against a repackager's re-test. Ten-plus years of export work means shipping documents, customs paperwork, and destination-country requirements get handled correctly the first time — a detail that costs nothing when it works and costs demurrage when it does not.

BASTONE's parent group runs four production sites and an R&D center, so our technical staff read specifications as chemists rather than as line items. If your process needs a different carbon-number cut, a tighter water limit, or a comparison between C12, C14, and C16 alpha olefins for a given hydrophobe target, our team will work through the grade selection with you before you commit to a container.
